Drone photogrammetry software outputs many different files in various file formats. This article describes the formats that can be imported into Virtual Surveyor. The article also describes the vector formats that you put on top of your drone data or that you can work with independently from any drone data.

It is important to observe that none of these file formats are linked to a particular software package. They are all open file formats.

Orthophoto / topomap raster formats

The following file formats are supported for orthophotos and topographic maps:

  • GeoTIFF
  • .tif/.tiff +.tfw
  • .jpg + .jgw
  • .png +.pgw
  • .img
  • .jp2

Note: .tfw, .jgw & .pgw are world files. They include georeferencing information but don't include information about the coordidate system which is typically unknown with these file formats.

We recommended to use GeoTIFF.

DSM raster formats

The following file formats are supported for Digital Surface Models and Digital Terrains Models:

  • GeoTIFF
  • .tif/.tiff +.tfw
  • .img

Point clouds formats

  • .las
  • .laz

Note: point cloud files are converted to raster elevation models.

Vector formats

The following file formats are supported for vector formats:

  • .dxf
  • .shp
  • .xml (LandXML)
  • .txt
  • .csv
