EPSG stands for European Petroleum Survey Group and is an organization that maintains a geodetic parameter database with standard codes, the EPSG codes, for coordinate systems, datums, spheroids, units and such alike. Additionally, this database contains the parameters for these objects or - if they cannot easily be expressed as values - at least references to where such parameters can be found.

Overview

EPSG Code Database

Every geographic object (coordinate system, spheroid, unit, etc.) gets assigned a unique number and the database is under continual active maintenance. An online database with all coordinate systems and the matching EPSG codes can be found online at EPSG.io: Coordinate Systems Worldwide.

EPSG Code in Source Files

The coordinate system with its EPSG code is usually stored in the source file (GeoTIFF, Shapefile, LandXML, etc.) and is read automatically by Virtual Surveyor. Virtual Surveyor allows to set a Project Coordinate System through the EPSG code. In the example below it is 31370. The terrain data is reprojected from their source coordinate system to the Project Coordinate System. You can also import an EPSG code along with your survey items by importing a .csv file directly into Virtual Surveyor.

Define Your Coordinate System with an EPSG Code

Option 1: You can manually define the coordinate system of your Virtual Surveyor project by adding an EPSG code (along with your survey items) via importing a .csv file directly into Virtual Surveyor.

Option 2: You can manually define the Project Coordinate System of your Terrain Creator data by adding an EPSG code with a .csv/.txt file.
